E-Verify VICTORY today is result of your constant pressure the last year

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

CONGRATULATIONS, FRIENDS,

Time after time after time over the last year, NumbersUSA’s members mobilized to advance E-Verify and close off millions more jobs to illegal aliens.

And just as many times, you suffered defeat.

But in almost an anti-climatic way, YOU WON TODAY.

Starting today, the regulation mandating that federal contractors use E-Verify is in effect!

In a sense, you pressured the outgoing Bush Administration to set this in motion and outlasted the Obama Administration to win this victory. It may be the most important offensive victory our side has won since the 1996 legislation that set up many enforcement programs, including E-Verify as a voluntary program.

Read my blog for details.

Help small states with pro-E-Verify Dem. Senators on SAVE Act

Sen. Pryor (D-Ark.) is expected to re-introduce the SAVE Act later this week. This is great news. Passage and implementation of the SAVE Act would put more Americans back to work than any other act of the federal government this year.

It will be an uphill battle to get this passed.

But the fact that it is a Democratic bill is a big plus. What we need, though, is for Sen. Pryor not to be standing alone. He needs a bunch of other Democrats co-sponsoring his bill.

The following 11 Democratic Senators ought to sign the bill because they joined Pryor two weeks ago in supporting Sen. Sessions’ fantastic E-Verify amendment for the Homeland Security spending bill:

Arkansas: LINCOLN
Louisiana: LANDRIEU
Minnesota: KLOBUCHAR
Missouri: MC CASKILL
Montanta: BAUCUS & TESTER
Nebraska: NELSON
North Carolina: HAGAN
North Dakota: CONRAD & DORGAN
West Virginia: ROCKEFELLER

Every one of these Senators ought to be co-sponsoring SAVE before it is introduced. Please push them to do what is right.

202-224-3121

The most important states for you to call are North Dakota, Montana and West Virginia because we have the fewest members there.

WHAT PRYOR’S BILL DOES OVER THE SESSIONS AMENDMENT

As you know (and can see on the top of our home page), we have a major petition and faxing campaign to keep the Sessions amendment in the Homeland Security bill which is currently in the joint House/Senate negotiating committee. We are most worried that Democratic Party Leaders will strip the amendment from the bill before it goes to the President.

If the strong E-Verify provisions are stripped from the Homeland Security bill, it is imperative that we come right back and have the Senate pass the Pryor bill.

I still hope the nation’s pressure on keeping the Sessions amendment will save it.

If it does, however, there still is a lot more that is needed in terms of E-Verify.

The Sessions amendment mandates all federal contractors to run all new hires through e-Verify. It also requires all employees actually working on a federal contract to be run through E-Verify, even if they have been working for the company for years. (Current law forbids a company to use E-Verify to check veteran employees.)

The Pryor SAVE Act extends the requirement of running new hires through E-Verify to every employer in America, whether or not they have federal contracts.

It would phase this in over four years, with the largest employers going first.

And in the fourth year, it would require all employers to run all of their workforce through E-Verify.

Imagine the millions of jobs that will open up!

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO THANK THE SENATORS LISTED ABOVE AND TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO FINISH THE JOB.

Update & analysis of E-Verify/Fence victory today

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
   From:   Roy Beck, President, NumbersUSA

7 Senators who switched & passed tough, tough E-Verify today

DEAR FRIENDS,

No. 1: Who were the 7 Senators who switched and brought us victory on E-Verify in the Senate today?

See the Magnificant 7 right here.

Attempts to attach mandatory E-Verify to the Stimulus Bill in March failed when 50 Senators voted to kill the amendment by tabling it. But today, 7 of those 50 came over to our side. Click to see which NumbersUSA activists from what states we should be thanking.

The vote today put the Senate on record as saying that returning military veterans and other unemployed Americans — not illegal aliens — should have government-paid jobs.

No. 2: View the full roll-call vote on Sen. Sessions’ amendment to mandate E-Verify for all federal contractors.

How did your 2 Senators vote?

This is the toughest most sweeping of Sessions’ amendments, all of which previously failed.

This one:

  • authorizes E-Verify PERMANENTLY
  • mandates that any business getting a federal contract must run all new hires through E-Verify
  • mandates that every existing employee who workS on the government contracts must be run through E-Verify

Thus, for the first time, E-Verify could be used to root out illegal aliens who were previously hired. The existing employee part only applies to that part of a company actually working on the government contract. Still, wouldn’t it be nice to know that no illegal aliens are being paid with taxpayer money?

No. 3: Which 6 Democrats defied Party leadership to vote for E-Verify in March and did it again today?

Hint: 5 are from states that partly or wholly are the Great Plains. Here they are.

Also at that link, read my entire analysis of the votes today on immigration amendments on the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill. Included is my salute to Senate Republicans who unanimously went against Big Business and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. How about that? I’m sure many didn’t want to vote with us, but voter pressure in their states has pushed them into becoming champions for American workers.

By the way, was that your state with the Senator who backslid, having voted for E-Verify in March but turning against it today?

No. 4: More phone calls needed Thursday for 2 more amendments.

Please go now to this page for the current status of voting on the Senate floor.

Our NumbersUSA legislative team is updating by the hour the progress of voting on DHS appropriations amendments.

As I write this, we are still waiting for votes on an amendment by Sen. Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Vitter (R-La.).

Grassley’s amendment would allow every employer in America to voluntarily run all their current employees through E-Verify to make sure that none are illegal foreign workers. Right now, it is illegal for an employer to do that. Can you believe it?

Vitter’s amendment would re-instate a Bush Administration rule that businesses get notified of all their employees whose Social Security numbers don’t match up with SSA records. This would be another way of driving illegal aliens out of their jobs.

It appears that Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) is using parliamentary moves to keep those two amendments from getting votes, once he lost on the Sessions and DeMint amendments. He probably will do what he has done often in the past: Call a cloture vote to end debate before the immigration amendments are brought to the floor.

Your phone calls may be the only things that can block this maneuver and force a vote.

Please follow the instructions on our FEDERAL E-VERIFY page for talking points.

The most important Senators to call are those who voted YES to kill the Sessions E-Verify amendment.

Especially if the Democrats’ phones are ringing off the hooks Thursday morning, they may tell Sen. Reid that he needs to allow an honest vote on our amendments.

No. 5: Fence vote was an eye-opener.

View the roll call vote of how each Senator stood on finishing the 700-mile fence on the Mexican border today.

  • 7 Republicans voted AGAINST the fence amendment (along with 37 Democrats). The Republicans were:
    Cochran (Miss.)
    Collins (Maine)
    Ensign (Nev.)
    Lugar (Ind.)
    Martinez (Fla.)
    Murkowski (Alaska)
    Voinovich (Ohio)
  • 21 Democrats voted FOR it (along with 33 Republicans). The Democrats were:
    Baucus (Mont.)
    Bayh (Ind.)
    Boxer (Calif.)
    Conrad (N.D.)
    Dorgan (N.D.)
    Feinstein (Calif.)
    Klobuchar (Minn.)
    Landrieu (La.)
    Lincoln (Ark.)
    McCaskill (Mo.)
    Merkley (Oregon)
    Nelson (Fla.)
    Nelson (Neb.)
    Pryor (Ark.)
    Rockefeller (W.Va.)
    Schumer (N.Y.)
    Specter (Pa.)
    Stabenow (Mich.)
    Tester (Mont.)
    Webb (Va.)
    Wyden (Oregon)

Can you find a pattern among those Democrats? And notice that in Indiana and Florida, the Democrat supported the fence while the Republican didn’t.

And what is going on in Oregon and California? When have we had the support of both Senators in each of those states?

THANKS FOR MAKING PHONE CALLS THURSDAY,

  • Urgent — Senate vote on E-Verify

    Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
       From:   Roy Beck, President, NumbersUSA
    Date:   Wednesday 8JUL09     9:30 a.m. EDT

Phone now — Senate may vote on E-Verify this morning

FRIENDS, PLEASE ACT IMMEDIATELY,Sen. Sessions again has an amendment to:

  • permanently authorize E-Verify, so the pro-amnesty forces can’t constantly threaten to kill it if they don’t get their way
  • require all federal contractors to use E-Verify to keep illegal aliens from taking jobs from Americans
We need all of you to place emergency calls to Senators — especially the 50 who voted to table Sessions’ E-Verify amendment on the Stimulus Bill last winter.

    202-224-3121

Sen. Schumer (D-N.Y.) who widely takes credit for getting the first mass amnesty passed in 1986 is leading the effort to block the amendment by Sessions (R-Ala.). It is pretty clear that Democrats are being urged by Party leaders to table the amendment so E-Verify can still be used as a bargaining chip for passing an amnesty this fall.

GET YOUR TALKING POINTS FOR THE PHONE CALL: Please go to your Action Buffet corkboard where you will see a phone note if one or both of your Senators voted against the E-Verify amendment last winter.

You must pound these Senators for refusing to open up federal contracting jobs to returning veterans and other unemployed Americans.

Ask them if 9.5% unemployment is high enough yet to turn against illegal aliens and stand in favor of unemployed Americans.

If you want to see Senators in other states who need a call, go to this page for a full list of the votes last winter. There you’ll see the rogue’s gallery of 50 Senators who voted YES to table the amendment and keep government jobs open for illegal aliens.

You should spare no emotion in your calls to these Senators if their staff say they plan to vote against the Sessions amendment or that they “don’t know” how they will vote.

When will unemployment ever be high enough for these Senators to say illegal aliens shouldn’t have the jobs?

Be sure to come back to the NumbersUSA home page often today to see up-to-the-minute reporting of what is happening in the Senate.

Also, once you have made your phone calls, be sure to send the new faxes that have been posted for you.

    Thanks for acting quickly,

    ROY

Please phone to help pass E-Verify amendment in House today (to override Obama plans to gut)

    Friday, June 12th, 2009
DEAR FRIENDS,After all the bad news that NumbersUSA’s Jim Robb emailed you yesterday about E-Verify, I can tell you this morning that we have a chance to counteract it.

For those of you who read this Alert this morning, you need to phone the people listed below immediately at 202-224-3121. (If you are reading this after Friday noon, check the NumbersUSA home page to see if the action has already been taken, before you make the calls.)

Today, the House Appropriations Committee will consider the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Bill for 2010. This bill already contains language that would extend the E-Verify program for two years.

However, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) will submit an amendment to the bill that would require government subcontractors to use the E-Verify program and weed out illegal aliens from their payroll.

You can read on our home page how the Obama Administration has plans today or early next week to gut the 2008 Executive Order that would require government contractors to run all their employees through E-Verify. But while the new Obama order would bow to the wishes of the greedy Big Business lobby, Rep. Kingston’s amendment would force the Administration to keep illegal foreign workers out of taxpayer-supported jobs.

If one of the House Appropriations Committee members is from your state, you will find a phone note with talking points on your Action Buffet corkboard.

Otherwise, call the Members below who are from the smallest states that are near yours.

Tell them that 14 million unemployed Americans would like to have the jobs that illegal aliens currently hold with government contractors. And that you expect the Representative to vote for the Kingston amendment to open up these jobs to unemployed Americans.
