Today’s Show: January 31, 2009

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Today’s show will feature me—solo.  Many folks prefer when I am on by myself.  For one, I am less inhibited and I drop a ton more information.  For another, there are times when the flow achieved on air solo is very good.  And because the hour is so short, many prefer to hear just from me.

Oddly enough when I “prepare” the show tends to fall flat.  Nonetheless, when solo I can get derailed and fail to connect the dots.  Therefore, feel free to call in about anything on my blog or to get me on the track you want me on.

Once I take off in a direction, if I sense that it is not garnering much interest (no phone calls or e-mail) then I am apt to change direction before finishing that subject.  However, today I have enough information for about four hours and we’ll see how I cram some part of that in a way that makes sense.

Expect me to speak on several levels at once and to change from “micro” to “macro” levels, from small personal examples to the Big Picture, not merely in juxtaposition but to demonstrate parallelism and attempt to get across some subtle yet profound points of truth.

Enjoy these days my friends.  These may be the best that we have left.  Invest in yourself and your health first & foremost because the roller coaster ride I see coming in June is beyond my ability to express in words.

How the Left Skews Public Perception of Divorce

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Like most over the years I have been subjected to the flood of information about the prevalence of divorce.  It appears to have been a misinformation campaign designed to make divorce more common, not merely more acceptable.  It appears to have been a campaign designed to reduce the stability of marriage, the family, and hence the stability of American society.

The truth is “first time marriages” ending in divorce never exceeded the 50% threshold.  While at one time it may have approached 50%, the way the statistics were presented by the media was a bunch of lies!  They reported the stats in a manner to obscure the truth and I believe induce the US towards becoming a more unstable society.

How did they do this?  Lie with statistics?  They aggregated the data in a manner to deceive and mislead the public.  While there were people who remarried and divorced multiple times, those were reported in a fashion that allowed one to draw erroneous conclusions.  It is indeed true that there are many who marry & divorce multiple times, and those marriages & divorces were throwing the statistics off.

In October 2006 at the Arizona Psychological Association a young psychologist out of Tucson whose specialty is divorce and marriage presented his data.  He really knew his stuff and I would like to get him on my show.  At that time this young doctor told us that the divorce rate for first time marriages was falling so fast that they (he and others studying marriage and divorce statistics) did not want to put a number on it!

What he did say is first time marriages ending in divorce rates were plummeting and no one knew why.  Divorce among first time marriages dropped below 40% and was continuing to drop at such a rapid pace no one knew what the current rate was.  The best guess we could get him to commit to was “about 33 to 34 %.”  There was speculation that first time marriages ending in divorce would stabilize at about 30%.

Conclusion:

There is hope for life time marriage.  Marriage can last a lifetime!

The Increase in Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Friday, January 30th, 2009

The explosion in autism really astounds me.  It is frightening!  It certainly makes a couple fearful of having a child.  To realize that so many families in my vicinity are affected by autism, Asperger’s and mental retardation really disturbs me.

For one, we know that a family into which a child is born who has Down’s syndrome will in all likelihood divorce.  We don’t know why, but couples who have a Down’s syndrome child usually divorce and end their marriage.  That does not help with the stability of society and makes marriage precarious.

Likewise, I fear similar outcomes for married couples who have children with autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.  While I know of no studies on the prevalence of divorce due to children born with birth defects, clinically we have observed over the years, this phenomenon of divorce apparently precipitated by such births and the burden of taking care of such disabled children.

A couple of years ago it appeared that the rate of autism was beginning to decline; however, that is not the case and it appears to have been a false hope.  With the rate exceeding 1 out of every 166 children, this represents a massive increase from the 2 children I saw during my years of post doctoral training.

This is such a rapid increase and it makes one wonder why we as a nation have not done something about it?  Such lack of response makes one wonder if it was not planned?  While that certainly seems ludicrous, the deafening silence from Washington and from our leaders makes one wonder.

Since the rate of autism appears to still be increasing, what will it take to get the attention of our national leaders?  Do we have to wait until 1 out of 88 of our children is born suffering an autistic disorder before we take action?  Do we have to wait until there are several autistic children living on every block before we seek to start a campaign to combat this scourge?  What does this bode for the future of our country?

Panic Disorder—Behavioral Treatment

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

This is generic advice and may not be suitable for you individually.  Please see your health care provider to determine what is best for you.

The basic behavioral approach to treat panic disorder from a behaviorist point of view is quite simple and very effective.  In general, having the client “self-monitor” reduces the incidence of panic attacks by approximately 50%.  Here’s how I do it:

We start out with having the client keep a “panic log.”  We want to achieve a “baseline” number of panic attacks so that we have a yard stick against which we can measure our progress.  This is observable and enumerable (one can count the number of panic attacks.) and from this initial data, we can compare the results of our interventions.

However, just having the client keep such a log and observe themselves is an intervention in & of itself.  Just from this homework assignment we often see a reduction in the occurrence of panic attacks and the development of insight into managing one’s self in order to diminish the occurrence and severity of panic attacks.

The client’s assignment includes keeping specific data about the date and time of each panic attack, logging the antecedents (what occurred just before the onset) and the consequences (what was the resolution), the quality (symptoms) and quantity (duration).  The more details we assign the client to track and write down, the better the results.

From this we obtain a baseline, that is, the initial rate of panic attacks prior to beginning treatment.  Remember, exercises in self-observation tend to become interventions in & of themselves.  Therefore, we often see an improvement in the first week; however, sometimes, especially when fueled by personality traits & features, there may be an exacerbation in panic attacks.

Furthermore, I also do an intake assessment of what the client has done to do to resolve his or her panic attacks that has not worked and how much caffeine the client ingests.  I have seen a correlation in clinical practice as almost half of my clients who complained of panic attacks had comorbid problems with caffeine.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has much to offer those who suffer from Panic Disorder.  See my earlier blog postings and archived shows.

News Flash: Miki Paul, Ph.D. is no longer on the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

While I called for her removal from the Board during my last show, it appears that Dr. Miki Paul has left the Board, probably as a result of the end of her appointed term.  Nonetheless, if anyone has experienced damage in their family relationships due to Dr. Paul and her obvious bias against males, please contact me and I will step you through whatever process necessary to release you and your family from her “spell,” her malpractice.

This is not an offer for treatment.  It is an offer of support in seeking justice.

News Flash: ADOC Director Dora Schriro resigns to . . .

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

. . . accept another position with none other than her lover & partner in crime former Governor Napolitano.  My friend just called me to inform me about this news and declared that Schriro following Napolitano to The Department of Homeland Security in DC proves that the two are lovers.

My father just reminded me that he predicted Napolitano would be taking Schriro to Washington with her a week before it happened.  My prediction?  It will take a minimum of five (5) years to repair the damage the “dynamic duo” have inflicted upon ADOC!

It just goes to show “you can sleep your way to the top” or maybe Dora takes the bottom?

“Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, announced at his staff’s annual prayer retreat that God told him Americans would embrace socialism in 2009 “in order to relieve their pain” and that the economy would rebound under an Obama administration.

“”The Lord said the economy of your nation will recover,” Robertson told a group assembled at Founders Inn on the campus of Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., a university Robertson founded.

“Robertson said God also declared, “The steps taken will lead to a dramatic increase in the power of government. The people will welcome socialism in order to relieve their pain. Nothing will stand in the way of a plan by Obama to restructure the economy in the same fashion as the New Deal in the ’30s.”

If you can’t trust the leaders of the Christian church, who can you trust?

 The answer:

Certainly neither Robertson nor other mainstream leaders.

Batten down the hatches.

Kissinger: Obama primed to create ‘New World Order’

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Drew Zahn writes for WorldNetDaily:

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=85442

“Policy guru says global upheaval presents ‘great opportunity'”

“Conflicts across the globe and an international respect for Barack Obama have created the perfect setting for establishment of “a New World Order,” according to Henry Kissinger, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former secretary of state under President Nixon.”

If anybody would know, Kissinger would!  Henry Kissinger was the bureaucrat who almost single-handedly brought over the bulk of the Nazi science war machine to the US!  Kissinger oversaw “Operation Paperclip.”  Not merely the rocket scientists but the biological guys who setup house at Ft. Detrick, Maryland and are still there!
